Why We Celebrate Newtownstewart

Ecclesiastical Heritage
Our area is rich in ecclesiastical landmarks. Traces of our early Christian settlements exist at Corrick, Scarvaherin, Pubble and there is a Children's Graveyard at Gallan Sessiagh, reminding us of the faith values of our ancestors.
Churches of a number of faith traditions populate our town and its skyline; we celebrate these beautiful buildings and recollect the role they have had in Newtownstewart's unique history!

Built Heritage
We have magnificent historically relevant buildings. And they tell stories of our past. These include
St. Eugene's Church, Glenock,
St. Eugene's Church of Ireland, Main Street and the Presbyterian Church at Moyle Road.
Harry Avre’s Castle overlooks the town, while
the Stewart Castle creates a backdrop to the town's Main Street. The town has two magnificent bridges; the original Newtownstewart Bridge and the more recent, Abercorn Bridge.
Remnants of old stone walling scattered within the town and its environs reminds us of the loss of the the Great Northern Railway in 1965.

Cultural Heritage
We celebrate our musical heritage our drama heritage. We recall our history through reminiscence and the telling of stories handed down by those who have walked our roads before. We archive our oral history and folklore.
We recognise our peoples generational traditions and cultural practices, knowing the important role they played in their lives.

Natural Heritage
Our location on the banks of beautiful rivers Strule, Mourne and Derg, and at the foot of the majestic picturesque Sperrins landscape is precious!
The town boasts access to a range of walks along beautiful trails overlooked by our local Bessy Bell and Mary Gray Mountains.
Who We Are
